The Ethiopian National Defense Force Empty
PostSubject: The Ethiopian National Defense Force   The Ethiopian National Defense Force EmptyThu Aug 04, 2011 2:33 am

The Ethiopian National Defense Force (ENDF) is the military of Ethiopia. Civil direction of the military is carried out through the Ministry of Defense, which oversees the ground, air, as well as military industry (the Defense Industry Sector). The current Minister is Siraj Fergessa.

The size of the ENDF has been fluctuating following the end of the war with Eritrea in 2000. In 2002, there were approximately 400,000 troops.[1] This was roughly the same number maintained during the Derg regime that fell to the rebel forces in 1991. However, that number was later reduced, and in January 2007, during the war in Somalia, Ethiopian forces were said to comprise about 300,000 troops.[2]

The ENDF consists of the four branches: Ground Forces, Ethiopian Air Force, Police, and Militia.[citation needed] Being a landlocked country, Ethiopia today has no navy. However, Ethiopia acquired a coastline on the Red Sea in 1950 and created the Ethiopian Navy in 1955. It operated until Eritrea's independence in 1991 left Ethiopia landlocked again. The ENDF term of service is a sixteen month service, of which four of the months are used for training. The service is voluntary.cree site internet
