Hurricane Wilma in 2005, he recalled, "was a very big hurricane that stayed on top of us for three days." Afterward, he said, "there was no work. Cancun was left in a very sad state. I remember that it took a year for Cancun to recover. There was no work for the first six months. People didn't return until after a year later."
A hurricane warning was extended Wednesday, stretching from north of Punta Gruesa to San Felipe. A tropical storm warning was in effect from Chetumal to Punta Gruesa, and a tropical storm watch was in effect for coastal Belize, from Belize City northward, and for the Honduran islands of Roatan and Guanaja.
"Tropical storm conditions are expected to reach the coast in the tropical storm warning area later today," the Hurricane Center said. The hurricane warning area will likely see hurricane conditions, including winds of at least 74 mph, by early Thursday.
Hurricane-force winds extended outward up to 25 miles (35 kph) from the center of the storm, and tropical storm-force winds extended outward up to 115 miles, forecasters said.
An orange alert was issued, Granados said, meaning it is time for people to prepare and gather resources that later may be used to assist those in need.
