CWZGs Red Canning Town Plans

Plans have been released by CZWG for a complete overhaul of the Rathbone Market site in east London's Canning Town.
Overlooking the busy Barking Road, the site is currently a dilapidated market with an obsolete nine-storey post war block on the eastern end of the site.
The new proposals will see an entirely new market constructed so that traders can remain in the area but have more modern facilities - a move that should add to the attractiveness of the place. Adding to this retail will be 4,500 square metres of new retail outlets and cafes with some of the space set aside for existing retailers who wish to have a modern shop instead of a stall.
There will also be 639 new apartments in a whole series of buildings including a landmark 22-storey tower. Adding a distinctive and colourful visual look to the scheme are bands of red cladding, either vertical or horizontal depending on the façade of the building they sit on. The blocks also contain blue spines adding some variety to them.
Between the various residential buildings will be new public spaces with greenery and other landscaping turning them into a more attractive area than what is currently there.
The architects have also designed the plans so they will see the area around the neighbouring overpass overhauled and turned from a concrete wasteland to somewhere more attractive with the entrance to it being rebuilt.
It's also important the scheme gets linked in properly with the local transport network so new pedestrian routes will be made to the nearest station - Canning Town.
The proposals for Rathbone Market are a joint public/private project involving the English Cities Fund, a consortium of English Partnerships, Muse Developments and Legal & General.
