Hammerson Reboot Southamptons WestQuay

Replacing plans by Terry Farrell Architects for a multi-coloured trio of 25 storey towers on the Southampton skyline standing next to the existing WestQuay shopping centre, is now a major refinement by developer Hammerson.
Named Watermark it is phase three of the WestQuay redevelopment. The project will feature a new public piazza at its heart, landscaped to provide a series of different levels for the public to enjoy. Off this will be a new multiplex cinema with ground floor retail and a 150 bedroom hotel.
The cinema consists of four narrow horizontal slabs, the upper three strata with their own individual pastel colour and the lowest level combining them together. These levels stacked on each other with set back slightly from the previous layer creating a modestly stepped appearance and provide extra space for the public to enjoy.
Behind the cinema will stand a new tower, mostly residential, which will make up the lion's share of the 200 apartments the project will offer. With what resembles a parallelogram, a distinctive shape is added to the tower as the design with the corners realigning as the building rises 25 storeys in height.
Adding an air of realism to what can be achieved by the developer in a single phase, the surface car parks behind the tower will remain for now showing that Hammerson has severely reduced the scale of the design from the previous Farrell plans that would have seen them built on with other towers.
