Derby Knocks Back Osmaston Road Plans

Published on 21-08-2008 by Skyscrapernews.com
Derby City Council has knocked back the plans for what would have been one of the first tall residential buildings built in the city for many years.

The plans by ADDC Architects are for a ten storey "gateway" building at 76-78 Osmaston Road consisting of ground floor retail, offices and a mere 14 apartments on the upper levels.

The scheme features the taller element clad in white terracotta set back from and contrasting with a red brick covered four level wing that runs along Osmaston Road with a terrace located on the top.

Responding to the south and eastern curve of Omaston Road is a wrap around on the podium adding a curve to the frontage. The tower section mirrors this with a similar curve running up it.

Particularly prominent is the service shaft that runs up the side of the building that the council objects to being so visible although this is considered an acceptable architectural feature in many places.

Having rejected the plans, the developer appealed but this was turned down partly on the basis that there was insufficient reasoning for a tall building on the site even though their Built Environment Team thinks it is a suitable site for a tall building and Derby City Partnership, of which the council is a member supports a tower on this location.

The end result is the local council finds itself in the contradictory position of supporting a tall building but opposing this one, not just because of the poor design, but because it would be so dominant when viewed from a short distance away, just as one would expect.
