Zhou Jun - Birds Nest Project

Thanks to the stunning, and only slightly fake opening of the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, there seems to currently be an interest in everything Chinese with the emerging skyscrapers and monumental architecture of the Peoples Republic standing centre stage.
Chinese photographer, Zhou Jun has spent years photographing construction sites up and down China as it leaves the paddy field past, and now for the first time his striking work has been brought from behind the Great Wall to the West.
Showing at Rossi and Rossi until the 29th of August, Zhou Jun's work features black and white images of skyscrapers such as Koolhaas's CCTV building and of course, the Bird's Nest, the main Olympic Stadium in Beijing.
Colour is vividly added to the monochrome photography with dyes in the form of red placing particular emphasis on the scaffolding wrapping its way around the half finished structures the images capture.
As one would guess, there's a deep symbolism to the colour red in China with it having been adopted by the Communist Party and used most prominently on the front cover of Mao's iconic Little Red Book.
Here it's being used symbolise government authority, commotion and change through construction with the buildings being an instrument of China's rulers pushing towards a 21st century revolution of their own and shaping a new country around them.
You can catch the Zhou Jun - Bird's Nest Project exhibition at Rossi&Rossi 16 Clifford Street, London, W1S 3RG which runs until the 29th August. The nearest underground station is Green Park.
