Work Starts On Piccadilly Tower

Published on 29-01-2008 by Skyscrapernews.com
Groundwork is beginning on what will be the tallest building outside London when completed, the Piccadilly Tower in Manchester.

Standing on Store Street and Ducie Street near Piccadilly railway station, the 188 metre tall mixed use monster has been designed by architects Woods Bagot for Irish developer Ballymore who bought a 95% majority share in the scheme last year.

The landmark development will contain a hotel and 430 apartments including the tallest penthouse in the entire country, a 220 room hotel and 749 parking spaces. There will be a skybar on the sixteenth floor.

A new public space by landscape architect Martha Schwatz will be built next to the entrance of the tower podium will be constructed between the tower and nearby canal. A separate office block is planned next door.

Once built the Piccadilly Tower will be taller than both the Lumiere Tower in Leeds and King Edward Tower in Liverpool however it won't be the tallest residential building in the country as a substantial amount of the skyscraper is to be a hotel.

One British record it will hold, at least for a short while, will be the title of most floors in a building, 58 in total, something that is currently held by the 50 floor One Canada Square in London.
