Tallest Tower Yet Proposed For Southampton

Despite the credit crunch, the relative tall building boom Southampton is experiencing could continue with plans to redevelop the old Meridan TV Studios in the city.
Developer Oakdene Homes hopes to build a 27 storey tower on the plot rising to approximately 90 metres in height making it the tallest building in Southampton and 8 metres more than the recently approved buildings at Woolston Riverside.
The proposals are currently at a pre-planning stage with the finishing touches to the design work being added, plus of course the inevitable pre-application discussions that developers have with the local council to try and get things right for eventual approval.
Oakdene looks upon the site on the eastern side of Southampton as a profitable venture. They paid a mere £8.5 million for the land which they feel they can fit 500 new apartments on plus additional office and retail space that should give it a finished gross development value of £100 million.
Whether they can actually get approval is another thing entirely. Southampton City Council are relatively friendly towards towers but there are no tall buildings nearby and plans for the regeneration of the Woolston site were vociferously opposed by locals with over 1,600 objections filed against the application.
