New Residential Tower Planned At Canary Wharf

Another almost-skyscraper has been officially proposed at Canary Wharf in the London borough of Tower Hamlets.
Standing to the immediate south of the planned Park Place and literally over the road from Riverside South, the scheme by Patel Taylor for South Quay Properties called Newfoundland which continues the colonial exploration theme as seen in Discovery Dock, Cabot Square, Canada Square et al.
Standing at 139.9 metres above ground level tower will with the façade overrun, see its height pushed up to 144.3 metres finishing just shy of skyscraper classification 150 metres.
Rising to 38 storeys with an attached 5 storey podium, it will contain a restaurant, approximately 1,600 square metres of retail on the ground and basement floors, a 150 room boutique hotel and 78 serviced apartments for people staying up to three months. The scheme contains no car parking but there will be 45 bicycle spaces.
Orientated in roughly the same direction as Riverside South and able to provide views between the two towers, the angled tower will have a slim line profile when viewed from Middle Dock avoiding the creation of a bulky wall that would obscure the whole view.
The building has been clad to reflect the varying uses within. On the lower floors and podium is the heavy use of stone panels and glass in metal frames, whilst the tower itself has glazed panels that should give it a smooth reflective look.
If approved Newfoundland will mark the latest rapid step in the densification of this small area that in recent months has seen proposals for Heron Quays West to the south-east, not to mention Park Place and Riverside South beginning ground work.
