Construction is beginning on what will be the tallest building in Wolverhampton, Victoria Hall's new Student Village located between Culwell Street and Lock Street, only a short walk from the town's train station.
Designed by O'Connell East Architects the £40 million scheme features four blocks, with the tallest of them, Building 1, being 25 storeys and about 75 metres in height. Building 2 will be eleven floors with Building 3 eight floors tall and Building 4 six floors tall.
In total they will offer 500 rooms of accommodation for students plus the usual communal facilities student housing enjoys including a gym and internet access for each room. Many of the rooms will also enjoy en suite bathing facilities.
The design is distinctively coloured in black, white and red cladding giving it a look rarely seen. The main block featuring a series of stages stacked on top of each other with each section one floor taller than the previous portion under it. From the main tower, the lower height buildings each step down as they run along the site to the north.
Contractors are now on site with a mass of cranes and cores that will soon be rising. Adding a unique touch to the engineering is the pre-fabricated modular steel structure being built off site by Fleming Group. Once it is erected it will be the tallest such building in the world.
The interiors are also being constructed off site and will moved in by lorry with the lounge/kitchen and bedroom including an en suite shower room of the individual units inserted into the tower one at a time.
The scheme is due for completion in September 2009 just before the new university year begins and will be 13 metres taller than Wolverhampton's current tallest building, Alder House.
