Nottingham To Build Britains Tallest Sculpture

Published on 28-01-2008 by Skyscrapernews.com
Nottingham University will have what could be Britain's tallest sculpture once approved plans for a new development on their campus are built.

Designed by Make Architects, the 60 metre tall sculpture called Aspire has been penned as a modern version of a column, taller even than Nelson's Column in London although this isn't an actual sculpture. The current tallest is Manchester's B of the Bang which stands 55 metres high.

Aspire is effectively a freestanding tube of steel girders wrapped together and splayed out slightly from its base giving it a slight conical shape. It's striking high-tech look, more a mast than a column, gives it a greater amount in common with the likes of Skylon, perhaps an apt choice by the architect given the amount of research that will be carried out on the Jubilee campus.

Surrounding will be approved three buildings. Two of these will be covered in bands of reddish terracotta cladding planned to evoke the feeling of a geological structure.

A third building for businesses will have a high tech metallic look. Acting literally as a gateway building, it has circular tower like ends and a sky bridge spanning the road it stands over like the entrance to a castle. A portcullis and boiling tar is not included.

A fourth building designed by architects, Maber Associates, a white box with a black side is currently going through the planning system as part of the campus.

All in all, the project will cost £129 million with construction already being carried out on site.
