Tallest Proposal Yet For Greenwich Peninsula

Patel Taylor Architects have designed this new mixed-use development in London, the tallest yet to stand on the Greenwich Peninsula.
With the tower element called The Meridian Tower after the nearby international dateline, it rises to 122 metres AOD and 32 storeys, the scheme has been developed by Peninsula Quays Ltd to stand on Plot NO602.
The height substantially exceeds the permitted maximum that the plot has with the existing limits being a mere 81 metres AOD although the effects of the height from the Greenwich Observatory should be barely visible thanks to the Greenwich Power Station chimneys between which it will appear.
The actual design features 396 new apartments, 117 of which will be affordable, plus 788 square metres of retail space, mostly along the southern frontage. 186 spaces for cars are also included in the proposals.
Although interlinked, the project is actually split into a series of blocks, a 5 storey pavilion and bar, the 6 storey Meridian block, the 18 storey Wrap block, 13 storey Strand block and 32 storey South tower.
They are massed together to step up in height away from the edge of the River Thames. The blocks are articulated to appear as separate parts even though they are joined with the tower being the most notable element. Here views are maximised over the pavilion and towards the river.
Sheer glass facades running vertically up the main tower contrast with the stepped appearance of the Wrap block and the depth recessed areas create throughout the rest of the design. They also contribute to an emphasis of height on the tallest part of the scheme.
Throughout substantial outside areas are given over to make the building more family friendly. This includes a 953 square metre communal garden and 112 square metres of play-space for children recognising that a substantial number of children, as many as 144, live in the development.
A planning application for the Meridian Tower and attached blocks has been submitted.
