South Glasgow could soon look forward to getting a new hospital extension that has been designed by Avanti Architects for NHS Glasgow and will have 1,100 beds plus a price tag of £842 million.
Standing at 14 storeys, the design sees a modern, sharp looking structure in tones of tan, white and aluminium. A glass sheath with random tinted panels will cover part of the building as a insulator against noise from the helipad.
The design also incorporates the Clock Tower and current management building which are grade B listed and remodels the interiors to enable administrative use which will be connected to the main hospital using landscaped pathways.
All rooms will be sole occupancy with en suite facilities and will have panoramic views of the surrounding area as well as views of sky gardens which will be created by laying grass roofs on the adjoined childrens hospital.
The two sites will be joined together by a subterranean link which will house a new laboratory testing centre and shared power plant that will ensure the site has 24hr coverage.
Included in the plans is an extension to the neo natal unit that will cost £15 million, which if pennies and pounds permit will have artwork to highlight where the public entrances are. This will also form a pedestrian zone in front of the childrens hospital.
All the site not built on will be landscaped to provide a relaxing environment in which to recuperate unfortunately the nearby Shieldhall sewage treatment works may be the wrong sort of aromatherapy.
Construction may begin in summer 2009 and be completed 2012 - 2014.
